Japanese Language Training and Cultural Exchange Program

At Yatra Institute, our language programs go beyond enhancing students’ proficiency in the four key skills of Japanese—reading, writing, listening, and speaking. We focus on deepening students’ understanding of Japanese culture and society, allowing them to analyze contemporary Japan from multiple perspectives. This approach helps students develop cross-cultural awareness, enabling them to not only master the Japanese language but also reflect on their own linguistic and cultural background in a meaningful way.

Our foreign exchange programs in Japan are designed to enhance communication skills from the very beginning. Through interactive cultural activities and excursions, students gain firsthand experience of Japanese life, making their transition smoother and more enriching.

Understanding Japanese Culture

To truly understand Japan, it is essential to explore its culture from a broad perspective. Our curriculum covers various aspects of modern Japanese society, including:

  • Lifestyle and Family Structure
  • Education System
  • Mass Media and Literature
  • Economy and Politics
  • Gender Roles and Youth Culture

We collaborate with experts in each of these fields to provide students with authentic insights into Japanese society. Additionally, students participate in discussion sessions where they compare Japan with their own countries, encouraging them to develop independent perspectives on different social issues.

As part of our cultural immersion, students gain hands-on experience in traditional Japanese arts and crafts. With access to skilled artisans and cultural experts, they explore unique aspects of Japanese tradition, such as “kata” (form) and the “iemoto” (master) system. These experiences allow students to appreciate Japan’s rich cultural heritage while shaping their own global outlook.

The Importance of International Exchange Programs

International exchange programs play a crucial role in strengthening mutual understanding and global cooperation. These programs offer students the opportunity to:

  • Enhance international friendships and cultural ties
  • Promote diversity in Japanese higher education institutions
  • Revitalize industries and local communities through student interaction
  • Empower young individuals from developing nations with global education

Recognizing the significance of student exchanges, the Japanese government actively encourages both international students to study in Japan and Japanese students to gain global exposure by studying abroad.

Opportunities for International Students in Japan

1. Intake of Foreign Students

The Japanese government has launched the “300,000 International Student Plan”, aiming to host 300,000 international students in Japan. To support this initiative, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) provide extensive resources for international students, including guidance on studying in Japan, visa assistance, and scholarships.

2. Support for International Students

(1) Study in Japan Information Services

Japanese embassies and overseas missions serve as primary sources of information for prospective international students. These institutions:

  • Offer individual consultations and information sessions on studying in Japan
  • Provide details on Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarships
  • Share university and college application guidelines

Comprehensive information on studying in Japan is also available through the STUDY IN JAPAN Comprehensive Guide website.

(2) Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Program

Students from over 190 countries and regions can apply for MEXT Scholarships through Japanese embassies and consulates. The initial screening process is conducted at overseas missions, with final selections managed by MEXT in Japan.

(3) Pre-Departure Orientation

Selected MEXT scholars receive pre-departure orientation from Japanese embassies, covering travel arrangements and expectations for life in Japan.

(4) Life in Japan

To ensure international students have a positive and enriching experience, local governments and private organizations provide:

  • Cultural exchange opportunities
  • Community engagement programs
  • Support services for MEXT scholarship students (especially those from ASEAN countries) through ASJA International

3. Support for Returning Students

Upon completing their studies in Japan, international students are encouraged to leverage their experiences to contribute to their home countries and strengthen ties with Japan. Many former students serve as cultural ambassadors, deepening bilateral relations between Japan and their respective nations.

To facilitate alumni engagement, MOFA supports the establishment of Japan Alumni Associations worldwide. Currently, there are over 250 Japan alumni associations that connect former students with Japanese institutions and businesses.

4. Encouraging Japanese Students to Study Abroad

Recognizing the growing need for globally competent professionals, the Japanese government aims to double the number of Japanese students studying abroad to 120,000 by 2020. With the demand for multilingual and culturally aware individuals rising, MOFA actively promotes overseas education opportunities for Japanese students.
